Switzerland has the highest lift-served skiing in the Alps, and the Valais canton in the south-west holds much of it: long side valleys climbing toward the 4,000 m peaks on the Italian border, with ski areas whose upper terrain sits well above the altitude where a mild spell costs a resort its base. Altitude is not the whole story, so each resort we cover is judged on its own 15-winter record rather than on the height of its top station.
