Saas-Fee sits at 1,800 m at the head of the Saastal, a car-free village ringed by eighteen peaks above 4,000 m. The Alpin Express gondola climbs to Felskinn at 2,980 m, where the Metro Alpin, the world's highest underground funicular, tunnels up to Mittelallalin at 3,456 m. Pistes reach 3,600 m on the Allalin glacier, which keeps lifts turning from midsummer into April and makes this one of the more snow-sure areas in Valais.

Common questions about Saas-Fee

Is Saas-Fee open in early December?

Historically the snow is there: in 15 of the last 15 winters Saas-Fee had a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain (2,980 m) in the first half of December, with a median depth of about 130 cm. The lifts themselves open 31 Oct. (15-season record, computed 24 Aug 2026)

How high is Saas-Fee?

The base sits at 1,800 m and the lifts reach 3,600 m, with most skiing around the 2,980 m mid-mountain level. The glacier terrain at the top is what keeps the snow dependable outside the core winter months.

How do I get to Saas-Fee from Milan Malpensa Airport?

Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the nearest airport at 200 km, about 3 h 20 min by road. There is no practical public-transport connection from the airport, so plan on a rental car or a pre-booked transfer. The full comparison, including other airports, is in the Getting there table above.

When does the 2026/27 season start at Saas-Fee?

Saas-Fee has announced 31 Oct as opening day for 2026/27; the season runs until 18 Apr. (season dates checked 5 Sep 2026)

Does Saas-Fee have a glacier?

Yes - Saas-Fee has glacier terrain reaching 3,600 m, which is why its season starts far earlier than at valley-level resorts and why late-season snow holds up well.

How reliable is the snow at Saas-Fee in January?

Very: in 15 of the last 15 winters there was a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain throughout January, and the median mid-January depth is about 174 cm. (15-season record, computed 24 Aug 2026)
