Engelberg sits at 1,013 m at the head of its valley in Obwalden, and its main skiing is on the Titlis side of the village. The TITLIS Xpress gondola climbs to the Trübsee hub at 1,796 m and on to Stand, where a cable car carries on to the top station at 3,020 m, and chairlifts spread out from Trübsee to the Jochpass, the Jochstock and Engstlenalp. A chairlift and a drag lift serve pistes on the Titlis glacier, which the operator plans to open first, on 24 October 2026; the runs from Stand to Trübsee follow on 28 November, the Jochpass on 5 December and the descent to the village on 12 December. The glacier pistes close with the rest of the mountain on 2 May 2027, and the operator lists no summer ski season. Titlis Bergbahnen markets 82 km of slopes, while OpenSkiMap's mapped geometry counts about 41 km of graded piste on the Titlis side. The Brunni lifts across the valley are a separate small area, not joined to Titlis on snow and not counted here.

Common questions about Engelberg

Is Engelberg open in early December?

Historically the snow is there: in 15 of the last 15 winters Engelberg had a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain (1,796 m) in the first half of December, with a median depth of about 75 cm. The lifts themselves open 24 Oct. (15-season record, computed 7 Oct 2026)

How high is Engelberg?

The base sits at 1,013 m and the lifts reach 3,020 m, with most skiing around the 1,796 m mid-mountain level. The glacier terrain at the top is what keeps the snow dependable outside the core winter months.

How do I get to Engelberg from Zurich Airport?

Zurich (ZRH) is the nearest airport at 100 km, about 1 h 25 min by road. Public transport takes about 2 h 13 min with 2 changes. The full comparison, including other airports, is in the Getting there table above.

When does the 2026/27 season start at Engelberg?

Engelberg has announced 24 Oct as opening day for 2026/27; the season runs until 2 May. (season dates checked 12 Oct 2026)

Does Engelberg have a glacier?

Yes - Engelberg has glacier terrain reaching 3,020 m, which is why its season starts far earlier than at valley-level resorts and why late-season snow holds up well.

How reliable is the snow at Engelberg in January?

Very: in 15 of the last 15 winters there was a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain throughout January, and the median mid-January depth is about 126 cm. (15-season record, computed 7 Oct 2026)
