Can You Still Ski at Easter? Late-Season Snow in the Alps

Easter skiing in the Alps is reliable if you book altitude, a glacier, or a resort that stays open late, and it is a gamble if you book a low resort in a year when Easter falls in the second half of April. By spring the question is no longer whether snow arrived, because it did all winter, but whether it is surviving the sun and whether the lifts are still turning when you get there. Both of those are decided almost entirely by elevation, aspect and the resort’s closing date, not by luck. Pick a high, north-facing ski area with a late season and Easter is one of the best-value weeks of the year: warm sun, long days, firm morning snow and thin crowds. Pick a low resort late in the season and you are betting on a cold snap.

Why is late-season snow a different question from mid-winter?
In December the question is arrival: did the storms come and did the base build. By late March and April the base is usually there in quantity at height, and the question flips to survival. Three things now dominate.
The sun does the damage, not the temperature alone. In spring the sun climbs high and strong, and it attacks south-facing slopes and low elevations first. A sunny 2,300 m north-facing bowl can hold winter snow deep into April while a south-facing run 500 m lower turns to slush by mid-morning and bare patches by the weekend. Aspect, which barely matters in January, becomes one of the biggest factors in April.
Spring snow runs on a freeze-thaw clock. A clear spring night refreezes the surface into a hard crust; the morning sun softens it into the forgiving “corn” snow that spring skiing is loved for; by afternoon it can be heavy slush. This is why late-season days are front-loaded: the good skiing is often from first lifts until early afternoon, and the smart move is to be high and on the shaded side as the day warms.
Altitude buys time. Every hundred metres of elevation pushes back the date at which the snowpack starts losing the daily battle with the sun. A resort whose skiing is centred well above 2,000 m keeps a proper base weeks longer than one centred at 1,400 m, which is why the reliable Easter resorts are, almost without exception, the high ones.
When is Easter, and why does that matter?
Easter is a moving target: it can fall anywhere from 22 March to 25 April. That five-week window is the difference between deep late-winter conditions and true late-spring, and it is the single most under-appreciated variable in booking an Easter ski trip.
An early Easter in late March is close to a normal late-season week: most resorts are open and snow at altitude is still plentiful. A late Easter in the second half of April is a different proposition. Many lower and mid-sized resorts have already closed for the season, the snow line has retreated up the mountain, and only the high resorts and glaciers are still skiing well. If your holiday is fixed to the Easter weekend, check where Easter falls that year before you choose a resort, because the same resort can be a safe bet at an early Easter and a poor one at a late Easter.
Which resorts stay reliable into April and beyond?
Qualitatively, late-season reliability sorts resorts into three tiers, and the pattern is even sharper than in early December.
Glaciers are the safe floor. Glacier ski areas are built to ski in spring. Hintertux runs its glacier all year; Stubai and Soelden keep their glacier slopes turning well into May in a normal year. If your Easter falls late, a glacier resort removes the timing risk almost entirely.
High non-glacier resorts hold on well. Resorts whose skiing sits mostly above roughly 1,900 to 2,000 m, the Obergurgl, Ischgl and Lech-Zuers type, typically keep a strong base and a full mountain open through April and often schedule their closing weekends and end-of-season events around it. These are the resorts where a late Easter still works without a glacier.
Low and mid-altitude resorts fade first. Lower resorts, however good in mid-winter, are the ones that lose their lower runs to the spring sun and often close in mid-April regardless of what snow remains higher up. In an early Easter they can be excellent; in a late one they are the ones to avoid.
One honest caveat that cuts across all three tiers: the long-term trend is against low-elevation shoulder-season snow. Peer-reviewed station analysis across the Alps (Matiu et al. 2021, covering 1971-2019) found the steepest declines in snow depth at lower elevations and in the shoulder seasons, spring included. A recent-winters lookback, which is what our resort pages use, already reflects that shift rather than a rosier long-run average.
How do closing dates factor in?
There is a trap in late-season planning: a resort can have plenty of snow and still be shut. Many resorts close on a fixed calendar date, usually mid-April, driven by staffing and demand rather than conditions, and once the lifts stop the base above them is irrelevant to you. So late-season booking is really two checks, not one: is the snow there, and is the resort still open.
Every resort page on this site shows the resort’s season close date next to its snow-reliability figures, so you can line up the week you want against both. As a rule, glaciers close latest, high resorts next, and low resorts first. If you are booking anywhere near or after mid-April, treat the closing date as the first filter and the snow statistics as the second.
A note on spring avalanche and slush
Late season brings the wet-snow avalanche cycle. As the pack warms and free water percolates through it, the danger pattern shifts to a daily rhythm: often lower in the cold morning and rising through a sunny afternoon as the surface loses strength. Off-piste and ski-touring decisions in spring are as much about the time of day as the overall danger level. From late November onward each resort page shows the current EAWS danger level in season, and in spring it is worth reading with the clock in mind. On-piste this mostly shows up as heavy afternoon slush, another reason spring days reward an early start.
How do you book Easter skiing with confidence?
Apply these filters, in order:
- Where does Easter fall this year? An early Easter widens your options; a late Easter narrows them to the high resorts and glaciers.
- Is there a glacier, or is the mid-mountain above roughly 1,900 m? Check the elevation figures on the resort page. Height is what survives the spring sun.
- Is the resort still open for your week? Compare your dates against the season close date shown on each resort page. Snow under a stopped lift does not count.
- What do the late-season statistics say? The resort pages give the share of recent winters with a skiable base in the second half of March and into April, stated plainly rather than left to the brochure word “snow-sure.”
Then use the live side of the site in the week before you travel: the current measured and modelled base, the 7-day forecast, and the resort’s open status, refreshed every morning. History tells you what to book; the live data tells you whether to be on the glacier or the north face when you arrive, and how early to set the alarm for the good corn snow.
The short version: Easter skiing is not a coin flip, it is a sorting exercise built around three numbers, the Easter date, the resort’s altitude and its closing date. Get those right and late-season skiing is quiet, sunny, and often the best value of the winter. Get them wrong and you have booked a hiking holiday.
