The Stubai Glacier is Austria's largest glacier ski area, spread across permanent ice above the Stubaital near Neustift. Its high-altitude terrain climbs from the Mutterbergalm base at 1,750 m to 3,210 m at the Schaufeljoch, giving dependable snow from autumn into early summer. Lifts usually start turning in October and keep running well into spring, and the whole area sits just a 45-minute drive from Innsbruck, making it one of the easiest big glacier day trips in the Alps.

Common questions about Stubai Glacier

Is Stubai Glacier open in early December?

Historically the snow is there: in 15 of the last 15 winters Stubai Glacier had a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain (2,900 m) in the first half of December, with a median depth of about 99 cm. The lifts themselves open ~3 Oct (estimated). (15-season record, computed 10 Jul 2026)

How high is Stubai Glacier?

The base sits at 1,750 m and the lifts reach 3,210 m, with most skiing around the 2,900 m mid-mountain level. The glacier terrain at the top is what keeps the snow dependable outside the core winter months.

How do I get to Stubai Glacier from Innsbruck Airport?

When does the 2026/27 season start at Stubai Glacier?

Stubai Glacier has not confirmed its 2026/27 dates yet. Based on past seasons we estimate opening around 3 Oct and closing around 16 May; both dates are estimates until the resort announces. (season dates checked 25 Aug 2026)

Does Stubai Glacier have a glacier?

Yes - Stubai Glacier has glacier terrain reaching 3,210 m, which is why its season starts far earlier than at valley-level resorts and why late-season snow holds up well.

How reliable is the snow at Stubai Glacier in January?

Very: in 15 of the last 15 winters there was a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain throughout January, and the median mid-January depth is about 139 cm. (15-season record, computed 10 Jul 2026)
