Kaprun sits at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn, Austria's first glacier ski area, in the Pinzgau valley of the Salzburg region. Its high-altitude glacier terrain reaches 3,029 m, giving dependable snow and one of the longest ski seasons in the Eastern Alps, from autumn into early summer. Modern lifts, including the K-onnection link over the Maiskogel, connect the village directly to the glacier, and the area forms part of the wider Zell am See-Kaprun region.

Common questions about Kaprun

Is Kaprun open in early December?

Historically the snow is there: in 12 of the last 15 winters Kaprun had a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain (2,450 m) in the first half of December, with a median depth of about 62 cm. The lifts themselves open ~16 Oct (estimated). (15-season record, computed 15 Jul 2026)

How high is Kaprun?

The base sits at 768 m and the lifts reach 3,029 m, with most skiing around the 2,450 m mid-mountain level. The glacier terrain at the top is what keeps the snow dependable outside the core winter months.

How do I get to Kaprun from Salzburg Airport?

When does the 2026/27 season start at Kaprun?

Kaprun has not confirmed its 2026/27 dates yet. Based on past seasons we estimate opening around 16 Oct and closing around 23 May; both dates are estimates until the resort announces. (season dates checked 15 Aug 2026)

Does Kaprun have a glacier?

Yes - Kaprun has glacier terrain reaching 3,029 m, which is why its season starts far earlier than at valley-level resorts and why late-season snow holds up well.

How reliable is the snow at Kaprun in January?

Very: in 15 of the last 15 winters there was a 30 cm or deeper base at mid-mountain throughout January, and the median mid-January depth is about 106 cm. (15-season record, computed 15 Jul 2026)
